Mackintosh Treasury: Miscellaneous Writings
Published in Hardcover by Loizeaux Brothers (June, 1987)
Author: Charles Henry Mackintosh
Average review score:

Precious Food for Souls
This collection of writings, first jointly published in 6 volumes in 1898, will introduce you to, and make you acqainted with a brand new Person, the Lord Jesus, and to a brand new Realm, that of the Heavenly Kingdom of the risen One. Precious food. Once you've tasted it, you won't find the like anywhere else, no matter how hard you look and how diligently you search. Still unmatched.

Read the other two critics, I wholly agree with them.

By the way, this Loizeaux Brothers Edition in one single volume is absolutely top notch. If you want to get something really worthy, that will accompany you for the rest of your life and hopefully even beyond, get yourself a copy of these collected writings. They're worth much more than what you could ever pay for them.

You will not find clearer teaching anywhere else.
I have read one of CHM's Misc. volumes on "The All Sufficiency of Christ" and its insight into the scriptures was food for my soul. I truly know that this author had a deep passion towards understanding how Jesus Christ, and his work accomplished on the cross, is peculiarly revealed on every page of The Holy Bible. CHM's work in bringing these pictures/types(symbolism)out from the pages of Scripture will give new meaning and encouragement to the Christian reader to more fully explore the Old Testament for another glimpse of the Great Prophet-Priest-King. Please do read this author's work for the good of your soul!

A masterwork of this Dispensation of God's Grace!
Mackintosh's works set forth, in luminous detail, the innermost convictions and heartfelt feelings of any true servant of God. In this dispensation of God's grace, no serious Bible student may leave this treasury unread, for it draws the heart heavenward as perhaps no other work ever has. It is obvious that the writer had not only a deep and abiding love for Christ, but a thorough-going understanding of the personal application of most of the key doctrines of scripture. A must for any who would mature in their experiential knowledge of Christ. C.H.M.'s unfolding of truth in terms of its application to the life of the individual is unparalleled. (This reviewer made the mistake of putting Mackintosh aside for 15 years because of outside pressure to read him. ...it was a serious blunder, FORTUNATELY corrected!)

Mama's Boy
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (August, 1993)
Author: Charles King
Average review score:

A most excellent read for a non-thriller reader!!!!
Charles King has the ability to keep one turning page after page no matter how horrifying the previous scene was. An accomplishment worthy of praise especially when the reader mostly reads historical romance which is a far cry from intricate murder mysteries that keep one on the edge of one's seat!

Excellent:-heart-stopping, nail biting suspense to the end!
Mama's Boy tells the story of a cop's worst nightmare: His family are the victims and his only witness is mute, on top of it all the killer is a CIA agent gone haywire, able to see the traps set for him, and avoid capture at all odds. A well rounded read, Mama's Boy sits up there with the best.

Great Book!!!
I read this a long time ago and have always remembered it. I read a LOT of thrillers and this one was one of the best. Very obscure but worth the look.

Man-made disaster : the story of St. Francis Dam : its place in Southern California's water system, its failure, and the tragedy in the Santa Clara River Valley, March 12 and 13, 1928
Published in Unknown Binding by A. H. Clark Co. ()
Author: Charles F. Outland
Average review score:

America's Forgotten Tragedy
In 1928, the St. Francis Dam, 50 miles north of Los Angeles, collapsed, releasing 12 billion gallons of water. The ensuing flood killed at least 450 people, caused millions of dollars of damage, and brought the career of legendary engineer William Mulholland to a tragic end. Charles Outland witnessed the disaster as a Santa Paula teenager. In 1963, he produced the first edition of this book, the most authoritative history of the subject. Virtually forgotten until then, the St. Francis tragedy remains little-known today, despite the fact that, measured in loss of life, it is the worst American civil engineering failure of the 20th Century. Outland's almost minute-by-minute retelling of the story, and his careful technical analysis, make this book highly readable and an invaluable historical record.

Man-Made Disaster - The Classic Text on L.A.'s Darkest Event
Outland's "Man-Made Disaster" (originally published in 1963)is probably the most complete volume of the story of the St. Francis Dam disaster of 1928. Outland's matter-of-fact narrative follows the course of the flood unleashed by the failed dam, providing tragic and heroic anecdotes along it's path of destruction. The book then goes on th tell the story of the 1928 investigation and coroner's inquest. The final chapter contains Outland's own theories as to the dam's collapse...theories that turned out to be very close to the truth as discovered in a modern forensic study made in the late 1980s.

Author Charles Outland was a teenager at the time of the dam's failure and witnessed the events described in his book first hand. The prologue contains a personal memory of an encounter with a flood survivor on the morning after the disaster. It is Outland's personal involvement that gives the text a clarity and emotional context rare in such non-fiction.

This book's original 1963 publication included a run of only 1,000 copies making it difficult to find. However, if you are an afficianado of California history, western water issues, or civil engineering, it is well worth your effort to locate and read "Man-Made Disaster".

Best book on this little known tragedy that was ever written
I grew up in the Santa Clara river valley as did 3 generations of my family before me. I have heard the personal testimony of my relatives who where there at the scene. Charles Outland's book was like reliving those stories with my uncles and grandparents all over again. His book is the only account thats able to put this incredibly tragic set of events into a truely human perspective. It is also the only book that thoroughly explains the historical roots of the dam, it's principle players and the aftermath of the event. It took me 6 months to find a copy and at $175 it wasn't cheap. But, the content and concise quality of Outlands account made it worth every penny. Only 1000 copies of the First edition were printed so good luck finding one. I have read the revised 2nd edition (5000 copies printed) and consider it an even better historical referance than the first edition. In it, Outland adds a lot of insight and follow up material that were not available in 1963. I highly recomend "A Man Made Disaster" to any body interested in historical non-fiction. Steve Yewell

Maps of the Mind
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Publishing Company (March, 1982)
Author: Charles Hampden-Turner
Average review score:

Completely indespensible to anyone interested in the mind
I encountered this book in the late 80's, and it became one of the most influential books in my life.

This book, essentially collates, combines, and compares theories of how the human mind works, finding parallels, offering interpretations, and finding intersections of ideas. From Frued to Marx, Jung to Blake, it's an amazing trip through explanations of "us," and served as my first introduction to concepts of cybernetics and feedback in mental and information systems.

If you're involved in psychology, social work, programming, writing, anything that touches on the mind and information, get it and read it. You'll be a much richer person for it.

Magnificent essays summarising thinking about mind
I bought this book years ago, and now need to replace it. With a brilliant layout of a cartoon, an abstract, and then a one or two page essay, Charles describes how people have thought about mind from very early times. His summaries are absolutely brilliant, and the insights from Freud to de Bono to ... are illuminating.

A brilliant condensation of various theories of the mind.
Maps of the Mind is an excellent review volume that integrates and condenses many different perspectives concerning the nature of the human mind. Using the metaphor of a map, the author organizes the work of several prestigious authors and theorists into 9 different levels, from the mechanistic and physiological to the paradigmatic and mythological. Probing, entertaining, and thought provoking, Maps of the Mind will provide you with a sophisticated and breathtaking vista on the intricacies of the human psyche.

Marvelous Mazes
Published in Paperback by Abrams Books for Young Readers (September, 1994)
Authors: Juliet Snape and Charles Snape
Average review score:

Best maze books we've found
These are fantastic mazes, each one has a rich "story" behind it - not just paths to get from A to B. The detail and variety within each maze is superb.

Our 3.5 year old loves them. Though the attention span of a 3 year old is not very high, he will gladly sit in my lap and go throuh half the mazes in the book at one sitting. I think in some ways it has helped his attention span.

We're looking forward to collecting the whole set...

Wonderful!
My 6 year old recieved this book for Christmas at the age of 5 and she still loves it. The pictures are colorful and there is enough detail to keep her attention, but they are not cluttered. There are only 12 mazes in the book, but she loves to go back through the mazes, look at the pictures again and again, even though she knows them by heart. I do think though that a young child does need to have a good attention span to sit and do these mazes, it is not appropriate for all children of 5 or 6. It is rated for children at the age of 9.

Marvelous Mazes
For the kid who loves mazes, this book is great. The artistry and concepts are fun for all ages! Unfortunately, the book has only 12 mazes in it, but we occasionally go back just to look at some of the pictures.

There are 6 books in the set.

Excellent book for teaching Music theory. Children & adult

Master Your Money
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (15 October, 1997)
Authors: Ron Blue and Charles R. Swindoll
Average review score:

Financial Management as easy as 1-2-3
The first time I saw the cover of Master Your Money (in Nairobi, Kenya, at my fiancee's place of work), my heart went cold. Financial management was a topic that scared me. I skimmed through the book and, for some reason, I started reading the first chapter. Before I knew it I had borrowed the book, read and reread it, made notes and outlined my financial present and future.

I presume the three key questions did the trick: Will I have enough money? How much is enough? Or possibly the graphic on the overall financial goals gave me a simple and clear picture on personal financial management. These clarified the issue on managing money in such a simple, easy way that I saw myself achieving my financial and non-financial goals. I had determined early in life to keep out of debt and the lessons I learned in MYM reinforced my resolution.

Needless to say, I recommended the book to friends, nay, I bought the remaining copies from the local bookstore that had them and ordered for some ten more to distribute to friends. They were excited and agreed with me that this was the book! I want more copies from friends. Five stars did you say? I would say it's a 6-Star book. It is excellent.

Take action - and make a financial change!
My husband and I worked through this book together. It is straight forward and really makes you think through the concepts of managing your money and resources. The book challenged us to take a step of faith and follow the biblical principles of money management. By applying those principles we were debt free (except for our house!) within one year - plus we actually saved money. We opened a general savings account, repair account and a Christmas account. I encourage anyone struggling with debt, or poor money management to read this book.

It's the powerful, inner motivation... You can do it!
Many books on financial planning focus on "how to do it." But for most people, those "how to" stuff remain as dreams that are not implemented. Ron Blue and Chuck Swindoll explain the inner problem why we get stuck in financial hole, dealing with the roots of financial problems that are true to human beings. Then they lead their readers to a series of life-transforming actions that are applicable immediately. These heart-and-mind actions will translate into powerful, inner motivations that will energize you to apply the practical, well-researched, up-to-date, realistic "how tos" they provide in this book. I use this book in my work as a leadership development consultant. My wife, an investment funds adviser, includes this book in her seminars and personal financial counselling.

Authors: Charles Brooks, Jerald A. Dively, and eIT Prep LLP

Great Series
I took the Professional test using the Pass-it book and passed easily. I tested last week using the Server Pass-it with a 900. This author does a good job giving you what is (subject wise) on the test. Two months ago I used the CCNA Pass-it. I have just purchased the Windows 2000 Infra Pass-it and will report my progress here>

Server Test is the First
I am a computer professional and I have always had problems taking any test. I ordered this book and read it from cover to cover. I scheduled the test and passed with a 900. It must have been this book that covered only the material I needed. I was so please with this author's style that I just purchased the 2000 Professional PASS-IT by the same author. If this one works out I see this same guy has just done another one on CCNA and 2000 Infastructure. Let you all know.

Great Book
This is the first MCSE examination that I took. I thought the test was going to be hard. But this book only included what I needed to pass the test. Because all the filler was left out I was able to concentrate on the important stuff. Easy to read and I passed with flying colors. Wish there were more from this author.

A Great One
Little Wolf, a white born Cheyenne raised as a brave has spent his life fighting against the white man. But after the battle of the Little Big Horn, June 25th.,1876 White Wolf tries to make a life for his wife and self. They pick a beautiful place in the Bitter Root Mts. However not far away is a small settlement of whites. When most of the braves go off hunting the people of Medicine Creek attack the village and kill most of the villagers all except White Wolf's wife. They take her to Ft. Lapwai to use her as bait so they can kill Little Wolf.

VERY, VERY GOOD!!!
This is the third and last book in this series. I think I liked it best of the three. All were good but I could just feel the thoughs and actions of the characters more in this one. Little Wolf is trying to stay away from the white people and live a life of peace. While he is out hunting a group of white men from Medicine Creek come to his valley and kill all of his people except for one and his wife who they take back with them. The story is really about how he gets her back and then she is taken again. The big scout the army sends after them is a good part. I really enjoyed the book. Anyone who likes stories of the old west and indians will enjoy this series. I kept wanting to cheer Little Wolf on. I so wanted him get his wife back and to take care of the ones responsible.

great finish to a wonderful series
The peaceful cheyenne warrior, Littlewolf, has retired to his secluded valley in the Bitterrot country. His hopes of peace and forgetting his past are shattered by the citizens of the local settlement, when his wife is taken hostage, and his home burned down. Now the proud Cheyenne warrior is back on the warpath to reclaim his bride, against an unreformed, cruel renegade army scout. in a battle of skill and witts the Littlewolf saga rolls on...

Memoirs of Charles G. Finney, The
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (November, 1997)
Authors: Garth M. Rosell and Richard A. G. Dupuis
Average review score:

EXCELLENT
20 years ago I read the incomplete memoirs they were excellent this edition adds some unpublished material, many cross-references and footnotes which I found nice to have, the compilers Rosell & Dupuis have done a great job. The book itself is very inspiring.

Mind you when I've drifted a little from God I found Finney objectionable, to hard to take! but when I've gone down the track of James 4:8 "draw near to God and God will draw near to you, cleanse your hands you sinners, purify your heart you double-minded" then Finney speaks as one who has faithfully gone down that path before me and as one who knows how to give good clear instructions on how to progress effectively! Good bye dead-religion, hello God.

I also highly recommend his "Revival Lectures". I have learn't more on answered prayer, effectiveness, revivals and my relationship with God from Finney's books than any other (outside the Bible) and I have many many answers to prayer to suggest it isn't just theory or dead words.

Best wishes to all.

There's something fishy about Finney...
Charles Finney is THE posterboy for American evangelicals--at least when the subject of revival is raised. Finney is lauded for his zeal, the crowds he drew, etc. What so many fail to note is that Finney WAS A HERETIC. Plain and simple. He denied the sinfulness of man, the death of Christ for the sins of man (he denied the imputation of our sin to Christ, and Christ's righteousness to us), and salvation by faith alone. So why did I give this book a five star rating? Because Messrs Rosell and Dupuis don't whitewash a thing about Finney--they give us the heretic, warts and all. There have been sanitized versions of Finney's memoirs on the market for years, but now the curtain is lifted, and we can see Finney's fishy theology for what it is, and from the source. This quote from Chapter 4 is significant: "[I could not believe] that men were utterly unable to comply with the terms of the Gospel, to repent, to believe, or to do anything that God required them to do. That while they were free to all evil, in the sense of being able to commit any amount of sin, yet they were in regard to all that was good. That God had condemned men for their sinful nature, and for this, as well as for their transgressions, they deserved eternal death, and were under condemnation...That men were passive in regeneration; and in short...the fact of a nature sinful in itself. These doctrines I could not receive. I could not receive his [George Gale, Finney's pastor] views on the subject of atonement, regeneration, faith, repentance, the slavery of the Will [sic] or any of their kindred doctrines." (pg. 48)

It should be noted that George Gale was a Presbyterian minister, and held to the doctrinal stance outlined in the Westminster Confession of Faith. That Finney did not hold to the WCF is clear from his account of his ordination:

When they [the ordination committee] had examined me, they voted unanimously to license me to preach. Unexpectedly to myself they asked me if I received the [Westminster] Confession of faith of the Presbyterian church. I had not examined it--that is, the large work, containing the Catechisms and Presbyterian confession. This had made no part of my study. I replied that I received it for substance of doctrine, so far as I understood it. But I spoke in a way that plainly implied, I think, that I did not pretend to know much about it. However, I answered honestly, as I understood it at the time." (pp.53-54.) The Westminster Confession of Faith, while unashamedly Calvinistic, still contains an understanding of justification that all major denominations would agree on; even those who would reject its Calvinism. Thus, for Finney to repudiate the WCF shows his flaming heresy.

That Finney didn't have a grasp of orthodox theology is evident from the assessment of George Gale after hearing Finney's first sermon: "When I came out of the pulpit [George Gale] said to me:'Mr. Finney, I shall be very much ashamed to have it known, wherever you go, that you studied theology with me.'" (Finney refused a chance to study at Princeton Seminary, claiming financial hardship. When he was told his tuition would be provided for, he still refused, stating that the Princeton grads he knew, George Gale included, "were not ministers that met my ideal at all of what a minister of Christ should be" (pg. 47.) (Why Finney consented to study with Gale, when it was plain how he felt about Gale, and Gale's theology, is beyond me. But then again, how he could deny all the cardinal tenents of orthodoxy and still be licensed by Gale and others is also beyond me.)

There is much more to this book than the portion I have chosen to concentrate on, and it is all interesting. I am just happy to find, in plain English, and his own words, evidence of Finney's heretical beliefs. I am tired of people accusing me of slander when I charge Finney with heresy; now I can prove it. This book is full of fascinating history, bad theology, and juicy narrative. If you are a Finney fan or foe, you should read this book--you won't be disappointed.

Why aren't we seeing this today?
I first read Finney's Memoirs when I was around 18, and it ignited within me a passion for revival that has not ceased. This edition, with all of its additions and footnotes, makes the Memoirs even more exciting.

Finney was used of God to birth revivals through intercessory prayer and preaching against sin in both America and England. Someone has said that 90% of his converts stayed true to the faith (about 10% of Billy Graham's stay).

In his Memoirs, written when he was in his 70's, Finney shares how God saved him, baptized him with the Holy Ghost, and immediately began using him in the conversion of souls. Formerly he was a lawyer, but he gave it up in order to become an evangelist. He tells stories from various revival meetings, including the humorous (and awe-inspiring) revival in the town of Sodom, with it's one righteous man -- Lot! He also shares how the Lord led him to give a series of lectures on revival, which were later published in book form and used by God to bring revival in various countries, including China through the ministry of Jonathan Goforth in the early 1900s.

If you're hungry for revival and more of God today; if the state of the modern church upsets you, then read this book.
